| About San Gwann: |
San Gwann has an ancient history which is woven into
the national history of Malta. For hundreds of years
this locality, overlooking Valletta Harbour, was known
as Msierah as well as Tal-Ghorghar, the latter name
being older and more common due to the fact that the
juniper tree flourished in this area. Msierah is the
plural of misrah.
In Neolithic times people definitely lived on this dominating
hill between the two valleys of Wied Ghomor and Wied
Ghollieqa, as attested by the famous cart ruts. They
may have lived in caves similar to those behind the
Tal-Mensija Sanctuary. Around them were megalithic temples
built in the 15th century BC. |
